Effects of survival processing on list method directed forgetting

چکیده

Two experiments examined the effects of directed (intentional) forgetting on information processed for its survival value. Experiment 1 used list-method procedure in which items their relevance to survival, moving house or pleasantness were followed by cue remember forget. Following encoding a second list, free-recall both lists showed that brought about greater remembering (after cue) and forget cue). 2 also manipulated mental context reinstatement prior recall. Although this manipulation was effective enhancing memory, more again shown condition. In processing “remember” (vs. “know”) responses, indicative retrieval associative contextual details. The mechanisms might underpin these evaluated considered relation future work.

The effects of list-method directed forgetting on recognition memory.

It is an almost universally accepted claim that the list-method procedure of inducing directed forgetting does not affect recognition. However, previous studies have omitted a critical comparison in reaching this conclusion. This article reports evidence that recognition of material learned after cue presentation is superior for conditions in which the material that preceded cue presentation wa...

Sleep can eliminate list-method directed forgetting.

Recent work suggests a link between sleep and memory consolidation, indicating that sleep in comparison to wakefulness stabilizes memories. However, relatively little is known about how sleep affects forgetting. Here we examined whether sleep influences directed forgetting, the finding that people can intentionally forget obsolete memories when cued to do so. We applied the list-method directed...

Retrieval practice can eliminate list method directed forgetting.

It has recently been shown that retrieval practice can reduce memories' susceptibility to interference, like retroactive and proactive interference. In this study, we therefore examined whether retrieval practice can also reduce list method directed forgetting, a form of intentional forgetting that presupposes interference. In each of two experiments, subjects successively studied two lists of ...

Inhibitory deficits in older adults: list-method directed forgetting revisited.

In list-method directed forgetting, participants are cued to intentionally forget a previously studied list while remembering a subsequently presented 2nd list. Results from prior research are inconclusive on whether older adults show deficits in this type of task. In 3 experiments, the authors reexamined the issue and compared younger and older adults' responsiveness to the forget cue. Across ...

Where is the forgetting with list-method directed forgetting in recognition?

Despite the fact that list-method directed forgetting instruction leads to decreases in memory performance on tests of free recall, there are to date no published reports of comparable effects in recognition testing. In the present article, we evaluated whether conditions that promote the importance of context in recognition, either via stimulus selection (Experiments 1 and 2) or by test choice...
